Audience

Community Legal Centres, Neighbourhood Houses, Libraries, Youth/Community Services, Learning institutions, English Language Schools, etc.

Event Outline

We know from the Public Understanding of Law Survey that employment, tenancy and debt/fines are amongst the most prevalent legal issues facing the 18-24 age group.

This multi-agency interactive event is aimed at young people on the precipice of adulthood and seeks to help them understand their rights and responsibilities in relation to employment, tenancy and debt and to identify when they may have a legal issue and where they can go for help.

Example event partners

  • Tenants Victoria
  • Victoria Legal Aid
  • Local Community Legal Centre
  • Young Workers Centre
  • Youthlaw
  • Consumer Action Law Centre
  • Financial Counselling Victoria
Top Tip

The sessions can be tailored to meet the needs of different audiences, ie young people moving out of home, newly arrived migrants, young parents, etc.

Requirements

  • An independent, welcoming space (café, library, Neighbourhood House, etc). Where do young people in your community already go or feel comfortable?
  • A budget for refreshments (afternoon tea or dinner. Pizza is always a winner. Donuts have also been successful).
  • Engaging and interactive activities. Sort, sharp presentations.
  • Opportunity for participants to ask questions and/or have 1 to 1 advice (marketplace set up).
  • Kids activities (colouring in sheets, jigsaw puzzles, books, duplo, etc) so parents can focus on the information whilst kids are kept busy.
  • Consider booking translators in local community languages.
