Audience

Neighbourhood Houses, Libraries, sporting clubs/gyms, U3A, craft groups, etc

Event outline

We get it – sometimes organising a separate event for Law Week can feel like a lot. But you don’t need to add to the load. If you run a group that already meets regularly, you have a captive audience and a safe space to bring in some legal expertise.

This could simply be inviting your local CLC to have an information stand at a morning tea or community lunch, having a specialist in employment law coming along to a regular mum’s group to let them know their rights when returning to work or even or having someone from the Victorian Ombudsman’s office attend the weekly crafternoon tea to talk about how to complain effectively.

The key is identifying a topic that is of interest to the group and providing a low-pressure environment for the community to learn about their rights and responsibilities. And you’ve already organised the food, right? Bonus!

Requirements

  • A group or class that meets regularly and a room that holds them
  • A legal partner (local CLC, VLA or law firm) who can provide the legal information
  • A breakout space for individual discussions (if needed)
  • Some lovely food to share
