Event information

WIRE, together with The Law and Advocacy Centre for Women, the Australian Muslim Women’s Centre for Human Rights, and the Multicultural Women’s Alliance Against Family Violence, invite you to take part in an important conversation about misidentification in the context of family violence.

This Victorian Law Week 2026 panel discussion will focus on how women and gender diverse people—particularly those from marginalised communities—are wrongly identified as perpetrators of family violence. The discussion will explore how misidentification occurs, the systems and service failures that contribute to it, and the serious consequences it has for safety, wellbeing, and access to justice.

Hear from a panel including a criminal law specialist, family violence practitioners, and advocates as they examine:

  • Who is most likely to be misidentified
  • Systemic and service‑level response failures
  • The cumulative impacts of misidentification
  • How legal and support systems can better protect victim‑survivors and meaningfully address the issue

This session aims to raise awareness, challenge harmful practices, and promote stronger, more just responses to family violence for those most affected.
