Event information
This event brings together a panel of mental health lawyers from Victoria Legal Aid and Natalie Plumstead Legal Consulting, alongside support workers from Neami National who work closely with people receiving community‑based mental health treatment.
The panel will discuss the law relating to community‑based compulsory treatment orders, including the supports available to individuals and the legal framework that governs these orders. The session will also explain the role of the Mental Health Tribunal, how hearings work, and the legal assistance available when orders are made or reviewed.
A key focus of the discussion will be a rights‑based approach to mental health treatment, advocacy, and decision‑making. Panel members will explore how human rights principles apply in mental health law and how individuals and supporters can navigate the system with greater confidence.
There will be time for questions and discussion, as well as information about support services available to consumers, family members, carers, supporters, and kin.
This session is designed for people who have had contact with mental health services, may be vulnerable to compulsory treatment, are currently or previously subject to treatment orders, or who support someone in this situation.
