Event information

When legal issues arise, language should never prevent people from feeling safe or accessing justice. This session is designed for Melbourne’s Polish‑speaking community and focuses on two important and sensitive issues: family violence and older person abuse (elder abuse), as well as improving access to legal services through language support.

Some community members may feel unsure about seeking help due to language barriers or limited familiarity with the Victorian legal system. This session, delivered by professional Polish interpreters, aims to reduce those barriers by providing clear, accessible information and support in a trusted environment.

Topics include:

  • Safety & The Law: Understanding Intervention Orders and legal protections available in Victoria.
  • Rights of Older Persons: How to identify and seek help for elder abuse (financial, emotional, or physical).
  • The Power of Your Language: The vital role of professional interpreters in police interviews and courtrooms to ensure equity and procedural fairness.
  • Where to Get Help: A guide to free legal services and Polish-speaking support networks.

By attending this session, participants will build confidence navigating the legal system and gain a clearer understanding of their right to be heard and understood in their own language.

This event will be a podcast on SBS Radio Polish Programme.

The audio will be available on SBS Radio website from 18th of May.
