Event information
This community legal information session focuses on the legal and financial considerations when parents give money to their children, either as a gift or as a loan. The session is designed for the local community, including migrants, seniors, and families, and will be delivered in clear, simple language with time for questions.
Local lawyer Wendy Wan will present on:
- The consequences and risk factors when parents give money to their children
- Treatment as a gift, including potential loss of funds, third‑party claims, the death of a child, and impacts on parents’ pension entitlements
- Treatment as a loan, including how repayments can be protected and the rights and powers of parents as lenders
- What happens if parents pass away before the arrangement is resolved
Participants will learn about their rights, possible legal implications, and when it is important to seek legal advice before making significant financial decisions.
The session will include opportunities for questions throughout and at the end. A morning tea will be provided, offering attendees a chance to socialise and connect.
