Event information
This online presentation provides an overview of Australian refugee law and how it applies to people who fear harm due to their gender, sexuality, or experiences of gender‑based violence. The session will be delivered by staff from the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre’s (ASRC) Gender Clinic.
The presentation will examine how refugee law protections operate for members of LGBTIQA+ communities, women, and others facing gender‑based persecution. It will explore the growing intersection between gender, sexuality, and family violence in refugee claims and explain how these factors are considered under Australia’s legal framework.
Drawing on real case studies, presenters will provide a detailed analysis of current law and decision‑making, highlighting common challenges and emerging issues in this area. The session aims to build understanding of how refugee claims based on gender and/or LGBTIQA+ identity are assessed and the risks faced by these groups.
This event is suitable for anyone with an interest in refugee law, human rights, gender‑based violence, or the legal challenges facing women and LGBTIQA+ people seeking protection.
