Would you like to understand how recent changes to Victoria’s family violence laws affect people who are most at risk of harm?

As part of Victorian Law Week, Nicholes Family Lawyers will moderate a panel discussion exploring key reforms introduced over the past 12 months and their real‑world impacts. Legislative changes, including the Justice Legislation Amendment (Family Violence, Stalking and Other Matters) Bill 2025, have expanded the legal definition of family violence to better recognise coercive control, stalking, systems abuse, and harm to animals. The reforms have also strengthened intervention orders and protections for children and young people.

The panel will discuss:

  • Key recent changes to Victoria’s family violence laws, including expanded definitions and longer‑lasting intervention orders
  • How these reforms are affecting victim‑survivors, older people, LGBTIQA+ communities, and people experiencing financial stress or isolation
  • Warning signs of financial abuse, elder abuse, and systems abuse, particularly where a person’s autonomy or decision‑making is being controlled
  • How legal, financial, and community organisations can work together to protect rights, promote autonomy, and support safety

This session is designed to provide practical insight, increase awareness, and highlight pathways to support for individuals and communities affected by family violence.

Panel Includes:

  • Joe Ball, The Victorian Commissioner for LGBTIQA+ Communities
  • Jade Blakkarly, CEO of WIRE
  • Luke Wright, Senior Manager, State Trustees
  • Jenna Tuke, CEO of Switchboard
