Beyond True Crime: appeal processes for the Wrongfully Convicted

The Criminal Justice team at RMIT presents an interactive session on the criminal appeals process in Victoria using examples from prominent cases where claims of wrongful conviction have been tested.

From Lindy Chamberlain to Adnan Syed, wrongful convictions have captured our attention and continue to test the accountability of criminal justice systems. Public Interest in true crime, alongside the emergence of true crime documentaries and podcasts, has increased the spotlight on the impact of the criminal appeals system and in wrongful convictions. 

How do you appeal a criminal conviction in Victoria? Is it as simple as presenting what a podcaster discovered in court? What bearing do the rules of evidence have on a claim of wrongful conviction?
